Navient Sr Accountant I in Reston, Virginia

This position is responsible for the accurate and timely preparation of the daily journal entries that reflect the cash transactions for the corporation and several subsidiaries. This includes downloading bank data, preparing journal entries, obtaining and verifying backup, uploading journal entries into PeopleSoft, working with the Treasury Manager sub-ledger, and posting entries. This position is also responsible for the reconciliation of monthly general ledger accounts, working with the Fixed Asset sub-ledger, and other ad hoc duties as requested by Management. Additionally, this position performs monthly tracker reconciliations and month-end duties.

  1. Booking Cash Transactions

a. Preparation of daily journal entries to accurately record the majority of the cash transactions for the corporation and its subsidiaries. This will relate, primarily to working daily Suspense items that result from Treasury Manager daily run,

b. Maintain an organized and useful filing system for the cash entries to provide timely information when requested.

c. Act as an effective liaison with Treasury, Loan Accounting, Securitization, Accounts Payable, and the Debt/Investment accounting groups for bank account and general ledger issues.

d. Work and clear all Suspense items for all bank accounts by month-end.

  1. Perform Month-end duties

a. Prepare the Revolving Credit Agreement principal and interest accrual spreadsheet for several relationships. This includes updating interest rates and assuring source documents tie to general ledger balances, and calculating monthly interest.

b. Perform several month-end closing tasks, to include preparing the cash matrix for the accounts within the scope of the position, reviewing general ledger balances for several business units, and other ad-hoc work as requested by management.

c. Review month-end Peoplesoft cash reports to be sure all Suspense items have been cleared and all cash lines have been posted to the ledger.

d. Prepare the Federal Home Loan Bank principal and interest booking for outstanding notes. This includes accessing on-line Federal Funds Rate Data and ascertaining Interest Expense ties to Principia system calculations.

  1. Tracker reconciliations

a. Reconcile large number of general ledger accounts, report and resolve variances, and update the tracker each month. Reconciliations increase in number at each Quarter-end and include Intercompany and Fixed Asset reconciliations.

  1. Fixed Asset Accounting and reconciliation

a. Work with the Manager for Fixed Asset Accounting, and their staff, to reconcile and input monthly assets. In addition, monthly Fixed Asset accounting reports need to be completed for other reporting groups, such as Tax and Financial Reporting.

b. Prepare journal entry to clear variances or re-class amounts to other Balance Sheet accounts.

c. Prepare and complete quarterly reports for Financial Reporting and Tax groups, including Depreciation Expense and Intangible Asset activity.

d. Prepare Lease Schedules for revised Accounting rules. Coordinate with Subsidiaries and Facilities to update Lease Inventory. Prepare and maintain Lease Payable reconciliations.

  1. Maintain Treasury Manager sub-system

a. Develop and input Accounting templates to the PeopleSoft sub-system.

b. Update rules to the templates as needed to assist in bank activity matching.

c. Attend ad-hoc meetings related to PeopleSoft sub-ledger maintenance. These include discussions related to disrupted banking transactions that affect daily Accounting matching.

  • Bachelor's Degree - BS in Accounting

  • 3-5 years experience in Accounting.

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Expertise in Microsoft Office products, especially Excel (Proficiency in VLookup and Pivot Tables
