Navient Internal Auditor I - Data Analytics in Reston, Virginia

Navient's Internal Auditing department works to promote an effective internal control environment through risk-based audits, controls testing, pre-implementation reviews, special projects, and risk and control education. Audits and reviews are focused in many areas such as information technology, operational, and regulatory compliance, as well as company governance and financial functions. To support the audit process, Navient has a dedicated Data Analytics (DA) team that works with the Internal Audit team on a project by project basis to automate testing where possible and perform testing on large datasets with the use of computer-aided audit techniques.

The Data Analyst with the support of the senior DA members will (1) Assist in the planning, scoping, design, creation, and execution of queries, methodologies, and files for analyzing and presenting data to assist the Internal Audit team in the performance of specific audit testing or independently test significant risk areas to ensure compliance with internal policy and regulatory requirements.(2) Ensure all assigned test work is properly performed using the appropriate data analysis tool and adequately documented in accordance with the department's policies and procedures and IIA standards. (3) Understand, track, assess, and follow up on deficiencies/exceptions noted during testing. (4) Summarize and effectively report testing results both orally and in writing to the audit team/management. (5) With the support of senior DA members, perform special projects and investigations as necessary.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. With the direction from senior members of the DA Team, assist in the execution of data analytics to (a) assist the Internal Audit team in the performance of specific audit testing and to (b) address risk areas and test controls against policy and regulatory requirements.

a. Execute audit testing using the appropriate sampling techniques, data analysis tools, and algorithms (models).

b. Communicate the progress, findings, and results of assigned test work to the senior DA Team members in a timely manner.

c. Complete detailed workpapers that are well organized, cross-referenced, well-supported, and thoroughly self-reviewed.

d. Review and understand business unit controls and management's self-assessment testing. Consider this information in the design and execution of data analytic projects.

e. Understand and follow Navient's Internal Audit policies and procedures as well as IIA standards.

f. Accurately record and track time spent on data analytic, audit and administrative activities.

g. Seek additional work and assist other department members, as needed, in order to achieve department goals and objectives.

  1. With the direction of senior DA members, assist in the execution of special projects, administrative activities, and special investigations as needed.

This position will support a federal government contract. Applicants must be able to obtain Public Trust security clearance as required of federal government contractors to include a background check conducted by the U.S. Government to determine eligibility and suitability for federal contract employment for public trust or sensitive positions. For this level of clearance, applicants must possess U.S. citizenship.

  • Must have 0-2years of auditing, analytics, data mining, programming, or relevant work experience.

  • Bachelor's Degree - Applicable Areas of Study: Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Information System Management, Data Analytics or Engineering

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Skilled in collecting and analyzing complex data, evaluating information and systems, drawing logical conclusions, and providing consistent quality output

  • Experience in the all or some of the following:

  • R and SQL

  • Advanced Excel (VBA) and MS Access

  • Experience in analysis and presentation of data

  • Some experience working with a variety of information systems and data files preferred, including large and complex files.

  • Adept at development of analytics, documentation and report writing.

  • Working knowledge major database management systems and relational database structure

  • Knowledge in all or some of the following is preferred:

  • SAS/Python/Excel (VBA)/Other statistical programming languages

  • Tableau/Other data visualization programs

  • Microsoft Access with SQL

  • Business Objects

  • TOAD

  • JCL/COBOL
